What a day Barranquilla Carnaval

Updated: Mar 6

Today we had plans to go to the parade of the Carnival in Barranquilla. The 2nd largest carnival after Rio. Are you crazy I hear you say... Probably we are.

We set off from the hotel to go to Via40 where the parade was supposed to start at 11. But 50 min away. Heat was rising as was the humidity

When we arrived near the area where we were supposed to enter they sent us to another entry where, after queuing up for a bit, started being squeezed more and more to suffocating point. Trying to save our lungs from crashing, we finally made it through to the parade area where none of the stewards could direct us to our mini palco, a shaded area where we were sitting. After many back and fros we found it. And 11:15 only 15 minutes post schedule the grand parade started. The colors and the music were great.

Foam was thrown among the spectators in good spirit.

And on it went for over 4 hours. Some was great some less so but after a while becomes a bit repetitive.

Still colourful and entertaining. I don't think the pictures can capture the color and the noise.

The parade in Barranquilla

All people around us were very nice and friendly and apart from the really suffocating entry it was very safe. Is a cultural event and I suppose is worth it for once in your life but afterwards thanks to the sun and the heat we felt too exhausted to go for a drink or one of the hundreds of street parties.
